Delete Encrypted X Chat DMs on Twitter/X
X moved direct messages to X Chat, which encrypts conversations end to end, so outsiders can't read those chats and neither can tools built on the old DM system. Redact now reads X Chat directly. Enter your 4-digit X Chat passcode once and Redact unlocks your encrypted chats on your own device, so you can delete your messages in bulk the same way you'd delete tweets.

Plan
Encrypted chats need your X Chat passcode.
Without it, Redact can't open your end-to-end encrypted conversations, so they stay locked and every scan skips them.
Why delete encrypted chats?
Encrypted chats still hold everything you sent
End-to-end encryption keeps outsiders from reading your chats, but every message you sent stays in the conversation for as long as the chat exists.
The people in the chat can still read what you sent
Anyone in the conversation can still scroll back, screenshot, or forward what you wrote. Unsending your own messages is the only way to take them back.
Personal details sit in old chats
The address you sent a friend, the new number you shared, the login code you passed along. Each one stays in the conversation until you unsend it.
Old DM tools can't see X Chat
Since X moved DMs to X Chat, tools built on the legacy DM system come back empty for encrypted conversations. Redact decrypts X Chat itself, so your newest chats are covered too.
Years of chats, one pass
Deleting years of messages one at a time in the X app is slow going. Redact finds every message you sent across the conversations you pick and works through them for you.
How X Chat deletion works
Unlocked on your device, unsent for everyone
Your X Chat passcode unlocks the encryption keys X keeps for your account. Redact uses them on your device to read your encrypted chats, then signs each deletion the same way the X app does.
- Your messages are unsent for everyone. Messages you sent disappear from the conversation for every participant, not just from your view.
- Other people's messages stay. Redact only deletes what you sent, so anything other people sent you stays as it is.
- Whole conversations leave your inbox. Delete an entire conversation and it disappears from your inbox.
- Your messages unsent
- Decrypted on your device
- Others' messages untouched
X Chat passcode
Enter the 4-digit passcode you use to unlock encrypted chats in X. Redact keeps your passcode on this device.
X Chat passcode saved
Redact uses it to open end-to-end encrypted chats during scans.
Scope it however you like
Every encrypted chat, or just the ones you pick
Your encrypted conversations show up in the DM selector. Pick them all, or narrow the run down.
Pick the conversations
Choose every encrypted chat for a full sweep, or tick only the conversations you want gone. Redact only decrypts the chats you pick.
Messages or whole conversations
Unsend the messages you sent inside a chat, or remove the entire conversation from your inbox in one go.
Keep the chats you want
Leave a conversation unticked in the DM selector to keep every message in it. Redact only scans and deletes messages in the conversations you select.
Preview before anything goes
Scan first to see the decrypted matches, drop anything you want to keep, then start the cleanup.
