Delete Twitter/X Bookmarks and Keep the Ones You Need

Twitter/X only lets you remove bookmarks one at a time, or all of them at once. Redact takes the middle road. From the desktop app's Advanced mode, it removes bookmarks in bulk, and a date range and keyword filters make sure only the stuff you really want gone is removed.

Plan

Last 30 days freeOlder needs Premium

Bookmarks of posts under 30 days old are free

The free window goes by when the post was published, not when you bookmarked it, because that's the date X makes available. Bookmarks of older posts need Premium.

Why trim your bookmarks

Bookmarks work best when there aren't so many of them to sift through

X keeps your bookmarks visible to you alone, so the reasons to clear some out are practical ones.

Good saves sink out of reach

X lists bookmarks with the newest on top, so the thread you meant to reread slips a little further down with every new save. Clearing out the stale ones brings it back up.

Most bookmarks expire quietly

Giveaways end, job posts close, sales finish, and live threads go quiet. Plenty of bookmarks point at something that stopped mattering a week after you saved it.

Anyone signed in as you can scroll them

A family laptop or a phone you hand to a friend opens straight into your account, bookmarks and all. A shorter list leaves less of your reading history in view.

What happens in a run

Your bookmarks list gets shorter, and nothing else changes

Redact reads your bookmarks list and checks each one against your keyword and date filters.

The post you bookmarked stays on its author's profile with its replies and likes intact. Its bookmark count goes down by one, but X never shows who bookmarked a post, so nothing points back to you.

  • Post date, not save date. The date range matches on when the post was published, because that's the date X makes available. A 2019 post you bookmarked yesterday still falls inside a range that ends in 2020.
  • A copy on your computer. Turn on local archives in Redact's Settings and each bookmarked post in the run, with its text, link, and stats, is saved on your computer, so clearing the list doesn't mean losing what was on it.
  • Posts left in place
  • Post date, not save date
  • Keywords to preserve
  • Optional local copy

Filter before you remove

Clear every bookmark, or keep the ones you still use

Nothing here is required. Leave all three empty and every bookmark goes. The date range and keywords to remove cut the run down to the bookmarks that match. Keywords to preserve work the other way, so a bookmark that matches one is kept, and filling in only that field removes everything else.

Date Range

Catches bookmarks of posts published inside the window you set, whether that's a fixed pair of dates or a rolling range like older than a year.

Bookmark Keywords to Remove

Only bookmarks whose post contains one of your words or phrases are removed, like every giveaway or hiring post.

Bookmark Keywords to Preserve

A bookmark whose post contains one of these is kept, whatever else it matches. Good for recipes, tutorials, and anything you saved for work.

Run modes

Same filters, four kinds of run

Preview Mode

Lists every bookmark your filters catch and touches none of them, so you can adjust first.

Review and Delete

Removes only the matches you approve. It needs local archives turned on in Settings first.

Deletion Mode

Removes every match without stopping, for when you already trust what the filters pick up.

Schedule

Runs the same cleanup again on a timetable, like once a month. This one needs Premium.

Walkthrough

How to delete your Twitter/X bookmarks with Redact

Set aside a few minutes at a computer. Bookmark removal isn't in the phone apps yet.

  1. 1

    Install Redact on your computer

Bookmark removal runs in the desktop app on Windows, macOS, and Linux.

    Download for your device →
  2. 2

    Connect your Twitter/X account

Open Redact, choose Twitter/X, and link your account securely. Your credentials are sent straight to Twitter/X and never touch a Redact server.

  3. 3

    Open the Remove Bookmarks tab

Choose Advanced at the top of the Twitter/X form, since Easy mode has no bookmarks button, then pick Remove Bookmarks from the categories.

  4. 4

Fill in the filters you want

Leave everything empty to clear the whole list, or narrow it down.

    • Date Range: matches on when the post was published, not when you saved it.
    • Bookmark Keywords to Remove: only posts containing these words or phrases lose their bookmark.
    • Bookmark Keywords to Preserve: bookmarks of posts containing these stay no matter what.

What's free: bookmarks of posts from the last 30 days. Older ones need Premium.

  5. 5

    Preview, then remove

Start with Preview Mode and look over the list it produces. When it's right, run the same settings in Deletion Mode and leave Redact running while the bookmarks come off.

A private list, handled privately

X keeps your bookmarks private, and Redact doesn't change that. The app runs on your computer and sends each removal straight to X, so the list, the posts on it, and your login stay off Redact's servers entirely. You can disconnect X from Redact after the run.
