A small industry of bots watches Reddit and caches what it sees. Deletion is aimed at Reddit's copy; it does nothing to theirs. Overwriting attacks the problem from the other side.
A delete only cleans Reddit's copy
Reddit forgets a deleted comment, but the archive sites that copied it earlier do not. Their cache keeps your original text, and anyone who knows where to look can still pull it up.

Plenty of people run an edit pass to poison what future scrapes can collect, then a separate deletion pass to clear the placeholder off Reddit. Belt, then suspenders: you set the action to Edit for the first run, then to Delete for the second.
One toggle turns deletion into overwriting
Every Reddit run in Redact has an action switch set to Delete or Edit. Flipping it to Edit is what puts the well-known placeholder in place of your words.
Flip the action to Edit and the run replaces each matched post and comment body with placeholder text instead of removing it. The default is a random harmless phrase, and paid accounts can write their own message.
Everything else works the same. Your subreddit lists, dates, keywords, and karma ceiling all aim the rewrite exactly the way they would aim a delete. The one thing that never changes: a short redact.dev tag is always appended to the replacement text and cannot be removed. Many subreddits key off that line to auto-remove edited content, so it has to stay.

Leave the filters blank and Redact overwrites every text post and comment you have. Or stack the same targeting you would use for a delete to rewrite an exact subset. Editing covers text posts and comments; link posts have no body to overwrite, and chat messages can be deleted but not rewritten.

Skip already-edited comments
On paid plans, Redact can leave comments it has already overwritten alone, so repeat runs do not chew through the same content twice.

Preview, then overwrite
Run a Preview to check the match list, then start the run and watch your old text become placeholder text one item at a time. Many people follow an overwrite pass with a deletion pass to clear the placeholder off Reddit too.

The editing engine runs where you are sitting. Your original text, your replacement text, and your login never pass through a Redact server or get stored anywhere. When you disconnect Reddit, the connection ends completely.
