What the spoiler generator does
Four ways to hide text in a Discord message, and one to take spoilers out.
Discord spoiler text: FAQ
Put two vertical bars on each side of the text, like ||this||. You can also start the message with /spoiler to hide all of it, or highlight the text on desktop and click the eye icon. This generator writes the bars for you and can hide every word or letter separately.
Every letter turns into its own black bar, so a reader has to click each one to read the word. People use it as a joke or to make a reveal take longer. It costs four extra characters per letter, so long messages hit Discord's limit fast.
Spoilers don't work inside code blocks or inline code, so text between backticks stays as typed. A stray | inside the hidden text can also close the spoiler early. This generator escapes those with a backslash.
Yes. For an image or file, click the eye icon on the attachment before you send it, or check Mark as spoiler on mobile. For a link, put || on both sides of the URL. Server invites still show their preview card, so a spoiler can't hide one.
No. Anyone who can read the channel can click it open, and the text sits in the message like any other text. If a message shouldn't be read, delete it instead.
Every Way to Do It
How to spoiler text on Discord by hand
The generator handles text. Images, files and links need Discord's own controls, so all of those are below too.
Two bars on each side
The quickest spoiler is two vertical bars before the text and two after it.
The ending is ||they were dead the whole time||.Readers see "The ending is" followed by a dark bar, and the words appear when they click it. The bar key is usually above Enter, typed with Shift. On a phone it sits on the symbols keyboard.
You can hide just part of a message, and you can use more than one spoiler in the same message. That's what makes this method better than the others for quizzes, where each answer gets its own bar:
Q1: Capital of Australia? ||Canberra||
Q2: Smallest planet? ||Mercury||The /spoiler command
Start a message with /spoiler and Discord shows a box for the text. Whatever you type there is sent as one spoiler covering the whole message. It's the same on desktop, web and mobile, and it saves hunting for the bar key on a phone.
The catch is that it's all or nothing. If you only want to hide the last line of a message, use the bars instead.
Highlight and click the eye
On desktop and in the browser, type your message, select the words you want hidden, and a small formatting bar pops up above them. The eye icon at the end of it turns the selection into a spoiler. Discord adds the bars for you, so you'll see them appear around your selection before you send.
Spoiler an image, video or file
Bars around text don't hide an attachment. Each attachment has its own spoiler switch.
On desktop, drag the file into the message box or upload it with the plus button. Hover over the preview that appears above the box and click the eye icon. The preview blurs, which tells you it worked.
On mobile, add the photo or file, tap its thumbnail before you send, and turn on Mark as spoiler.
Two things catch people out:
- The message you type with an attachment isn't hidden along with it. If the caption gives away the picture, put bars around the caption as well.
- A file whose name starts with
SPOILER_is sent as a spoiler. Renaming a file toSPOILER_ending.pngbefore you upload it works on any device, and it's how bots send spoiler images.
Spoiler a link
Put the bars around the URL, the same as with text:
||https://example.com/finale-recap||The link stays hidden until a reader clicks the bar. Server invites are the exception. Discord still shows the invite's preview card under the message, so the bars hide only the link text.
Hide every word or every letter
Wrapping each word, or each letter, in its own bars makes a reader click their way through the whole message:
||y||||o||||u|| ||w||||i||||n||It's mostly a joke format, for dragging out a punchline or a reveal, and nobody wants to type that by hand. The generator does it in one click, and it leaves the spaces between words unhidden so a sentence still looks like a sentence.
Watch the length. Every spoiler adds four characters, so one letter becomes five. A free account's message limit is 2,000 characters, which works out to roughly 400 letters spoilered one at a time. Nitro raises the limit to 4,000. The generator counts the result for you and warns you when it's too long to send.
When the bars show up instead
Sometimes a message goes out with the bars in plain sight and nothing hidden. There are three usual causes.
- It's inside code. Spoilers don't work between backticks, in inline code or in a code block.
- A stray bar ends it early. A
|inside the hidden text can pair up with the bars around it. Put a backslash in front of it,\|, and Discord shows it as a plain bar. The generator does this for you. - There's only one bar on a side. It takes two on each side. A single
|is plain text.
Want to show the bars on purpose, say to teach someone the trick? Put a backslash before every bar, \|\|like this\|\|, and Discord prints the bars as typed.
Turning spoilers off for yourself
If you'd rather never click a spoiler again, Discord has a setting for that. Open User Settings, go to Chat, and find Show spoiler content. It has three choices:
- On click is the default. Every spoiler stays hidden until you click it.
- On servers I moderate opens spoilers automatically only in servers you moderate, so you can read them while checking a channel.
- Always opens every spoiler for you everywhere.
It only changes what you see. Everyone else still gets the bars.
Taking spoilers back out
Someone pasted a whole paragraph one letter at a time and you want to read it, or quote it somewhere else? Copy the message, paste it into the generator and choose Remove spoilers. You get the plain text back with the bars stripped out.
A spoiler hides nothing from anyone who clicks
A spoiler is a courtesy, not a lock. Anyone who can read the channel can open it, bots and moderation tools read the text inside it, and it sits in your Discord data package like any other message. Pasting a phone number or an address behind bars doesn't make it private. If something you posted shouldn't be readable at all, the fix is deleting it.
