Hiding parts of a screenshot: FAQ
Drop, paste or choose the screenshot, then drag a box over each part you want hidden. Press Save covered picture to download a copy with those parts covered. The original file on your device isn't changed.
No. In the saved file a blacked-out area is nothing but black pixels. That's different from drawing a shape over a picture in a document or a notes app, where the original can still be sitting under the shape.
Blur and Pixelate may leave text or faces identifiable. Use Black out for names, numbers, addresses, text or faces when identifying details must be removed.
Marker and highlighter tools are often slightly see-through. A few passes can look solid on screen while the text under them is still there, and raising the brightness or contrast brings it back. A solid black box doesn't have that problem, because every pixel under it is replaced.
No. The saved copy is drawn fresh by your browser, so it doesn't carry over the original file's hidden details such as location, device or the time it was taken.
PNG, JPEG and WebP pictures up to 16 megapixels and 16,384 pixels on a side, which covers screenshots from phones and computers. The saved copy is always a PNG, whichever kind you started with.
No. The picture is opened and redrawn by your browser on this page. It isn't sent to Redact or to anyone else.
