Broker profile
LexisNexis
- Specialty CRA
- Free file disclosure
- Security freeze available
One of the largest consumer-data holders in the US, and one of the few with real FCRA rights attached. LexisNexis Risk Solutions compiles public records and proprietary data into files that insurers, lenders, government agencies and law enforcement buy - and you can demand a copy, freeze it, and dispute it. Its California filing declares it collects minors' data, government ID numbers and precise geolocation. The catch is that "LexisNexis" is several legal entities, and which one you write to changes what happens.

Each broker is scored 1 to 4 across the six dimensions above; higher means more exposure, and the overall gauge is their average.
What each dimension means
- Data published: how much and how sensitive the personal data they put out.
- Re-listing frequency: how quickly you reappear after opting out.
- Complaint record: volume and pattern of complaints across BBB, Trustpilot, and Sitejabber; no findable review presence counts against the broker.
- Opt-out friction: how hard the removal process is to complete.
- Operator opacity: how hidden the operating company and its principals are.
- Prior data incidents: history of breaches or leaks of the data they hold.

Background
Background
"LexisNexis" is not one company, and the difference decides what rights you have. Its own consumer portal spells it out - LexisNexis Risk Solutions Inc. "is a consumer reporting agency as defined under the Fair Credit Reporting Act", while LexisNexis Risk Solutions FL Inc. "is not a consumer reporting agency and provides various services such as identity verification, fraud prevention, and risk management services".

SageStream, LLC, now part of LexisNexis Risk Solutions Inc.
The practical effect is that the entity holding the data you care about most - your consumer file - is the one that isn't the California registrant. The registrant, LexisNexis Risk Solutions FL Inc., is the non-FCRA side doing identity verification and fraud scoring. Your disclosure report, your dispute rights and your security freeze all run against LexisNexis Risk Solutions Inc. under federal law instead.
What the company says it does is unusually candid. Its customers "use our products to prevent and investigate fraud, investigate crimes, and keep communities safer", and it names them as "banks and financial institutions, insurance carriers, healthcare providers and government agencies, law enforcement agencies, and non-profits". The data comes "from public record and publicly available data sources" plus "proprietary data and information from third-party data sources".
The two filings behave completely differently, and the numbers are the clearest thing in this profile. LexisNexis Risk Solutions FL Inc. reported 12,769 deletion requests in 2024, granted 12,692 of them in full, denied 77, and did it on a one-day median. That is among the best compliance records in the entire California registry. RELX Inc., the legal-research side, reported 130 deletion requests and denied 100 of them.
One more corporate detail worth knowing before you opt out. SageStream, LLC is now part of LexisNexis Risk Solutions Inc., so a prescreen opt-out here also lands on your SageStream file - SageStream being an alternative-data credit bureau in its own right. That's stated on LexisNexis's own opt-out page.
Write to the wrong entity and you get the wrong answer. The risk business grants nearly every deletion request in a day. The legal-research business denied 77% of the handful it received. They're both "LexisNexis", they file separately with California, and they publish different contact addresses. The guide below routes you to the risk-side consumer portal, which is the one that holds a file on you.
Data Published
Data types
LexisNexis publishes nothing you can search yourself, which is exactly why people don't think to check it. What it holds shows up in its own California filing and in the disclosure report it will send you on request.
Personal information of minors - one of the minority of registrants answering yes
Government-issued identification numbers used to verify identity
Precise geolocation
Public-record data - addresses, property, liens, judgments, bankruptcies
Insurance claims history, through the C.L.U.E. consumer reports its FCRA entity produces
Identity-verification and fraud-risk scores derived from the above
Prescreen lists used by creditors and insurers for firm offers of credit and insurance
It sells to law enforcement and government, by its own description. The consumer portal names "government agencies, law enforcement agencies" among its customers and says products are used to "investigate crimes". That is a materially different exposure profile from a people-search site, and it's the reason the personal-safety opt-out below exists as a separate track.

Sister brands
LexisNexis belongs with the credit bureaus rather than the people-search sites. Like them it runs an FCRA-regulated consumer-report business alongside data products that sit outside the consumer-report framework, and like them the opt-outs are split across several separate channels rather than one form.
If you're doing the bureaus, do this at the same time. A LexisNexis file feeds insurance underwriting and identity decisions that the Equifax, Experian and TransUnion files don't cover. Freezing all three credit bureaus and leaving LexisNexis open leaves a real gap.
Reputation
Trust signals
LexisNexis has no consumer review footprint worth reading - it sells to institutions. The meaningful signal is what it told a regulator about its own request handling, and on the risk side that signal is unusually good.
FAQ
Q & A
Does LexisNexis have a file on me?
Probably, if you're a US adult who has held insurance, applied for credit, or appears in public records. You don't have to guess - LexisNexis Risk Solutions will send you a free consumer disclosure report showing what it holds. Requesting it is the first step in our LexisNexis removal guide.
Which LexisNexis do I actually contact?
The risk side, at consumer.risk.lexisnexis.com. That's where the consumer file, the freeze and the opt-outs live. The legal-research business (RELX Inc., lexisnexis.com) files separately with California and denied 100 of the 130 deletion requests it received in 2024 - it isn't the one holding a consumer file on you.
Can I delete myself from LexisNexis entirely?
No, and it's worth being straight about that. As an FCRA consumer reporting agency, its consumer-report business is legally entitled to hold your file. What you can do is get a copy, dispute what's wrong, place a security freeze so it can't be released, and opt out of the marketing and prescreen uses that sit outside the consumer-report framework. There's also a separate opt-out if you're facing a threat to your personal safety.
What is a security freeze and should I place one?
A freeze under the FCRA blocks release of your consumer file. It's the strongest lever available here. The trade-off is real, though - an insurer or lender that can't pull your file may slow down or decline an application, so a freeze is best placed when you're not about to apply for anything and lifted when you are.
What is SageStream and why does it appear here?
SageStream, LLC is an alternative-data credit bureau, and LexisNexis's own opt-out page states it "is now a part of LexisNexis Risk Solutions Inc." The practical effect is that a prescreen opt-out submitted to LexisNexis also applies to your SageStream file. One request, two bureaus.
Is LexisNexis covered by the FCRA?
Partly, and the split is the whole story. LexisNexis Risk Solutions Inc. is a consumer reporting agency under the FCRA. LexisNexis Risk Solutions FL Inc. - the entity registered as a data broker in California - says in the company's own words that it is not one, and does identity verification, fraud prevention and risk management instead. Your FCRA rights run against the first; the California Delete Act registration covers the second.
