Removal guide · LexisNexis

How to remove your info from LexisNexis

You can't delete yourself from LexisNexis, and any guide claiming otherwise is wrong - it's a consumer reporting agency, and the law lets it hold a file. What you can do is more useful than a delete button. Get a free copy of your file, freeze it so nobody can pull it, and opt out of the marketing uses. There are four separate opt-out tracks, and most people only need two of them.

First decide

Work out which of these you actually need

LexisNexis runs several separate processes and they do different jobs. Doing all of them is fine; knowing which matters saves time.

  • Consumer disclosure report - a free copy of your file. Do this first, because everything else is easier once you can see what's in there.

  • Security freeze - blocks release of your consumer file under the FCRA. This is the strongest control available and it costs nothing.

  • Prescreen opt-out - removes you from the lists creditors and insurers use for firm offers. Also applies to your SageStream file, since SageStream is now part of LexisNexis Risk Solutions Inc.

  • Direct-marketing opt-out - stops marketing uses that sit outside the consumer-report framework.

  • Personal-safety opt-out - a distinct track for people facing a threat to their personal safety. If that's your situation, use this rather than the ordinary opt-out.

  • Daniel's Law opt-out - for covered persons, meaning judges, prosecutors and law-enforcement staff. Also handled on the same page.

Opting out is not the same as freezing. The marketing and prescreen opt-outs don't stop an insurer or lender pulling your consumer file - only a security freeze does that. If your concern is who can see your file rather than who markets to you, the freeze is the one that matters.

The steps

Submit the opt-out

01

Choose how to submit your request

Go to consumer.risk.lexisnexis.com/opt. The page offers three routes: Submit Online (the one LexisNexis recommends, and the one this guide follows), a printable opt-out form to post, and a phone line on 1-888-497-0011. Click Request Opt-Out/Opt-In to take the online route.

LexisNexis's Choose How You'd Like To Submit Your Opt-Out/Opt-In Request page with three cards: Submit Online marked Recommended with a Request Opt-Out/Opt-In button, Print & Mail Your Request with a Printable Opt-Out Form button, and Call Us with the phone number 1-888-497-0011
Three routes in - online is the recommended one and the one we walked.
02

Fill out the online form, identity details included

The Opt-Out/Opt-In Request form asks for your identity up front: first name, last name, street address, city, zip and date of birth, plus either your Social Security number or your driver's licence number and state - we used the driver's licence. The page's own instructions say the details are used only to verify identity and process the request, and warn that a request it can't connect to a file in its possession may not be fulfilled - so give the details as they'd appear on your records.

The Opt-Out/Opt-In Request page on LexisNexis's consumer portal, whose instructions state that proof of identity may be required - name, address, city, zip, date of birth, and either a Social Security Number or a driver's license number and state - and that requests it cannot verify may not be fulfilled
Identity proof is required - SSN or driver's licence plus state.
03

Submit, and note the under-review notice

Submitting lands back on the portal with a banner: "Thank you for your request. It has been received and is under review." So the opt-out is reviewed rather than instant - though LexisNexis Risk Solutions FL Inc.'s own 2024 filing reports a one-day median on opt-out requests, so the review shouldn't take long. Keep a dated screenshot of the notice.

Received and under review - the request is queued, not instant.

The rest of the toolkit

Your file, the freeze, and disputes

The opt-out above is the removal flow. These three run through the same portal, and they're documented from LexisNexis's own pages rather than a completed run.

  • Request your consumer disclosure report - the free copy of your file, from the portal's request form with the same identity details. LexisNexis says it sends a letter by US Mail explaining how to read the report online, so there's a postal delay built in, and the address it holds for you has to be current.

  • Place a security freeze - from the portal's Security Freeze section. This is the FCRA freeze: it blocks release of your consumer file, it's free, and it's the strongest control on this page. Expect to prove your identity, and keep the PIN or confirmation.

  • Dispute anything wrong in the report - a dispute corrects the record where an opt-out just limits some uses of it. The portal publishes a dispute-process document, and the Consumer Center on (866) 897-8126 handles disputes by phone and post.

  • The prescreen opt-out carries across to SageStream automatically, since SageStream is part of LexisNexis Risk Solutions Inc.

Confirm

Confirm it worked

The honest confirmation here is a second disclosure report a few months after your requests, because it's the only view you get of what LexisNexis actually holds. There's no public listing to re-search.

LexisNexis Risk Solutions FL Inc.'s own 2024 filing reports a one-day median on both deletion and opt-out requests, with 12,692 of 12,769 deletions granted in full. On its filed numbers, this is one of the more responsive brokers in the registry - so silence for weeks is a reason to chase rather than to assume.

Keep the freeze PIN or confirmation somewhere you'll find it. You'll need it to lift the freeze temporarily when you next apply for insurance or credit, and chasing it later is more painful than filing it now.

If it fails

Troubleshooting

  • The letter never arrived: the address LexisNexis holds may be stale. Call the Consumer Center on (866) 897-8126 and ask them to confirm the address on file before resubmitting.

  • You don't want to put an SSN in a web form: use the printable request form by post, or the phone line on (888) 497-0011.

  • Your request was refused as unidentifiable: LexisNexis says it may not comply if it can't connect your request to information it holds. Adding the driver's licence number and state alongside the address usually resolves it.

  • You wrote to the wrong LexisNexis: the legal-research business at privacy.inquiries@lexisnexis.com is a different registrant that denied 77% of its 2024 deletion requests. Re-file through the risk-side consumer portal instead.

  • FCRA disputes have their own escalation: if a disputed item isn't corrected, you can complain to the CFPB, which supervises consumer reporting agencies directly.

Stay off

Keeping it under control

You aren't going to get off LexisNexis, so treat this as maintenance rather than removal. The freeze is the durable part - it stays until you lift it. The opt-outs need rechecking, because prescreen and marketing opt-outs have historically carried expiry terms across this industry.

And do the rest of the file-holders while you're here. Equifax, Experian and TransUnion hold the credit files, and the joint prescreen opt-out for all four nationwide bureaus runs through OptOutPrescreen.com separately from this one.

Take yourself off data broker sites

Redact scans 120+ data broker sites from your device, finds where your details are listed, and submits the removal requests for you. If a broker relists you, it files again.
