Each broker is scored 1 to 4 across the six dimensions above; higher means more exposure, and the overall gauge is their average.

What each dimension means
  • Data published: how much and how sensitive the personal data they put out.
  • Re-listing frequency: how quickly you reappear after opting out.
  • Complaint record: the volume and pattern of complaints across BBB, Trustpilot, and Sitejabber. No listing, or a listing with no reviews, counts against the broker.
  • Opt-out friction: how hard the removal process is to complete.
  • Operator opacity: how hidden the operating company and its principals are.
  • Prior data incidents: history of breaches or leaks of the data they hold.

A typical CheckPeople report includes a person's full name, current and previous addresses, age, phone numbers, email addresses, likely relatives and associates, criminal records, court records, and arrest records. The platform sells unlimited searches and downloadable reports through a paid subscription.

The subscription billing is where CheckPeople gets in trouble. The BBB has logged a pattern of complaints about unauthorized recurring charges - users reporting unexpected charges of $29.16 every 30 days after free trials, often without documented consent. The BBB has issued an F rating, citing both industry concerns and CheckPeople's failure to respond to 29 separate complaints. CheckPeople is not BBB-accredited.

Watch the billing if you try the opt-out. CheckPeople's opt-out should never require payment. If you're asked for a credit card along the way, back out. The BBB complaint pattern around recurring charges is specific and well documented.

Data sources: US public records (voter rolls, court filings, property records) plus commercial data aggregators. Records are not verified against the actual subject and may be stale or attributed to the wrong person.

Sealed and expunged records risk. CheckPeople's report content is scraped from a wide net of court records and may continue to display criminal data that has since been sealed or expunged under state law. If you find such records on your CheckPeople listing, document them with a timestamped screenshot before opting out so the evidence exists if escalation is needed later.

BBB notes a pattern of unresponsive customer service. The F rating is driven in part by CheckPeople's documented failure to respond to consumer complaints. If the on-site opt-out doesn't work, escalating via phone or email may have low success rates - keep dated records of every attempt so your paper trail shows what you asked for and when.

UnMask · Trazi Ventures

CheckPeople's closest relative is UnMask, a free people-search site that says its search is powered by CheckPeople.com. The two run the same Suppression Center under different colours. California's data broker registry lists them as separate companies, CheckPeople, LLC and UnMask, LLC, both in Orlando. Slatkis, Inc. also oversees at least one other Florida LLC at CheckPeople's Orlando address, Trazi Ventures, LLC. The full scope of Slatkis-managed properties isn't publicly disclosed.

Related broker: UnMask

UnMask shows CheckPeople's data under its own name and files with California as its own company, with its own privacy contact. An opt-out request to one isn't a request to the other. Each site runs its own Suppression Center, so do both.

Trust signals

Mostly negative

Independent review and trust-rating sites consistently rate CheckPeople poorly. The dominant theme across all platforms is the same one the BBB flags: unauthorized recurring charges following the "$1 free trial" entry point.

Note on Trustpilot: different pages of CheckPeople's Trustpilot listing show slightly different aggregate scores (1.2, 1.3, 1.4 across recent snapshots). The score floats in the 1.2-1.4 range but the qualitative pattern is consistent. Treat the rating as "Bad / 1-2 stars" rather than a single fixed number.

Litigation

$2.6M settlement (2024)

CheckPeople settled an Illinois Right of Publicity Act class action in late 2024. The same theory produced ZoomInfo's $29.55 million settlement and the $4.89 million Eisenberg v. Confi-Chek settlement. CheckPeople's was the smallest of the three and covers a comparable claim pattern.

The class action alleged CheckPeople used Illinois residents' names, ages, current city/state of residence, former residence locations, lists of possible relatives, and other identifying details to advertise and promote CheckPeople subscriptions - without consent - in violation of the Illinois Right of Publicity Act. The damages subclass covers Illinois residents whose profiles appeared on search results that were clicked by a user who then purchased a subscription. The injunction subclass covers all Illinois residents in CheckPeople's database during the broader injunction period.

We have not found a Federal Trade Commission enforcement action, state Attorney General consent decree, or California Privacy Protection Agency (CPPA) Delete Act settlement against CheckPeople, LLC or Slatkis, Inc. as of the last-updated date below. The Illinois Right of Publicity settlement is the only resolved major case we have on record for this broker.

FAQ

Q & A

Common questions
Is CheckPeople a data broker?

Yes. CheckPeople is a US people-search and background-report service publishing names, addresses, phones, emails, ages, relatives, criminal history, court and arrest records, property history, marriage and divorce filings, and professional licenses. Sells unlimited searches and downloadable reports through a paid subscription. Settled an Illinois Right of Publicity class action for $2.6 million in late 2024.

Who owns CheckPeople?

CheckPeople, LLC is owned by Niche Ventures Management LLC and managed by Slatkis, Inc. out of Orlando, Florida. The LLC was formed September 5, 2012, and it's the entity on California's data broker registry. A secondary address sits in Palo Alto, California.

What information does CheckPeople publish?

The eight categories CheckPeople publishes are full names with aliases and prior names, current and previous street-level addresses, landline and mobile phone numbers, approximate age and date of birth, email addresses, names of likely relatives and associates, criminal records and court and arrest records, and public-records data including property history, marriage and divorce filings, and professional licenses.

Can I remove myself from CheckPeople?

You can opt out, through its Suppression Center at checkpeople.com/opt-out. That hides your listing from its people-search results and stops CheckPeople selling or sharing it. It isn't a deletion, and the company keeps the record. You verify an email address, save your birthdate, give your legal name, and pick your record from the ones that match. The birthdate can't be changed once it's saved, so enter it carefully. If the form finds nothing for a listing you can see on the site, write to compliance@checkpeople.com, the privacy contact on its California registration. See our CheckPeople removal guide for the screens.

How long does CheckPeople take to remove information?

CheckPeople's privacy rights page says an opt-out can take 5 to 7 days to take effect, and longer to clear from search engines. That's the company's own figure. We haven't timed one.

Is CheckPeople covered by FCRA?

No. CheckPeople is not a Consumer Reporting Agency under FCRA. Its data legally cannot be used for FCRA-covered decisions. The relevant litigation has been Gaul v. CheckPeople, LLC (C.D. Illinois 1:21-cv-01313), which settled for $2.6 million under the Illinois Right of Publicity Act in October 2024 over the use of Illinois residents' identifying data to advertise paid subscriptions.

Take yourself off data broker sites

Redact scans data broker sites from your device, finds where your details are listed, and submits the removal requests for you. If a broker relists you, it files again.
