See how much of it is your own
A Telegram export can hold everyone's messages as well as yours, so the first thing the viewer does is tell them apart. You see how many messages there are, how many you sent, and how they're spread out across all the years it covers.
- Every message, yours and theirs
- A bar for every year, in two shades
- Photos, videos, voice messages, stickers and files counted apart
See when the talking happens
The same messages, laid out by time. See which hours your chats are busiest, which days of the week, and which months. Every chart can be switched to another view or to a plain table of all the numbers behind the chart.
- Messages by month, by hour and by day of the week, yours in the darker shade
- Any chart as bars, a line, a pie or a table
- The first message, the busiest day and the longest run of days
Find where you said something
Every chat in the export, with how many messages it holds and how many of them are yours. Groups and channels you've left are on the list too, marked as left. Open any chat to read it the way it ran, with replies, forwards, photos and voice messages in place. Search it, narrow it by sender or date, and print it or save it as a PDF file.
- Private chats, groups, channels, bots
- First and last dates for every chat
- Who said how much in each chat
Find what shouldn't be out there
Look up your address, your phone number or a name across everything at once. A match can be something you wrote or something written to you, and each one opens the chat it came from.
- Every chat searched, busiest first
- Who said it, when, and in which chat
- A filter for only the messages you sent
How it works
Three steps. Whichever format Telegram gave you, it opens.
Built to stay on your device
An export is your chats word for word, other people's messages included. It's treated that way.
Telegram exports: common questions
In Telegram Desktop on a computer, open Settings, then Advanced, then Export Telegram data. Tick the kinds of chat you want. To get everyone's messages in a private group, untick Only my messages under it. Press Export, and when it finishes, press Show my data. Telegram saves the export as a folder named DataExport with the date on it. Drop that whole folder on this page.
The viewer opens both HTML and JSON exports. HTML stores messages as pages in a folder, while JSON stores them in result.json. JSON identifies senders by account number, and HTML identifies them by name. A full HTML export needs Account information to identify your messages. For a single private chat, only JSON lets the viewer work out which sender is you. Account details, contacts and signed in devices are shown only for JSON exports. HTML doesn't record the export's time zone, so the viewer uses your computer's time zone and estimates the offset for daylight saving time.
It still opens. The viewer works from whichever chats are in the folder and doesn't need the contacts, sessions or media. Without Account information an export of several chats usually doesn't say which messages are yours, and then the viewer shows the totals without splitting them.
Yes, when you drop the whole export folder and the export was made with those kinds of media ticked. Photos and stickers show in the chat, and videos and voice messages play in your browser's own player. They're opened from the folder on your device and never uploaded. If you open result.json by itself, or the files weren't exported, each one shows as a plain label instead.
Yes. Open the chat and press Print or save as PDF. Your browser's own print box opens with the chat laid out as plain pages, and choosing Save as PDF there gives you a file. Set a range of days first to print part of a long chat. You can also download the chat as a CSV table that any spreadsheet opens.
A full export in JSON also holds your account details, the contacts synced from your address book, the people and bots Telegram ranks as the ones you use most, and every device and website your account is signed in to, with the place and IP address Telegram has for each. The viewer lists all of it under What else Telegram gave you. Phone numbers and IP addresses stay covered until you press Show.
No. Export Telegram data is part of Telegram Desktop, the app for computers. Sign in to Telegram Desktop with your account and the same chats are there to export.
Yes. In Telegram Desktop, open the chat, open its menu and choose Export chat history. Drop the folder it makes on this page. For one private chat exported as JSON, the viewer works out which of the two people is you. A single chat exported as HTML doesn't identify you, so the viewer doesn't split the messages by ownership. An export of one group or channel doesn't say which sender is you, so its messages aren't split into yours and everyone else's, though every other part of the viewer still works the same.
No. Your browser reads the file where it sits on your device. No part of it is sent to Redact or to anyone else, which you can confirm by turning off your internet connection after the page loads and opening the export anyway, which works exactly the same with the connection off.
Because Telegram puts them in your export. A private chat is exported whole, with what you sent and what was sent to you. A private group starts with Only my messages ticked, so untick it to get everyone's. Public groups and channels only export whole through Export chat history, in the chat's own menu. The viewer shows the sender's name on every message and counts yours and everyone else's apart.
An export holds what was in the chats you ticked on the day you made it. Messages deleted before then aren't in it. Secret chats aren't either, since they're kept only on the devices that took part. Rows that record an event, like someone joining a group or a call, are left out here because nobody wrote them.
For security, Telegram can hold a new export request before it starts, and it tells your other devices that one was made. It shows the date to come back on. Repeat the request from the same computer then.
Redact deletes the messages you've sent on Telegram, in the direct messages, group chats and channels you're still in, and you can limit it to a date range. In direct messages, Redact can also delete messages the other person sent. In groups and channels, deleting other people's messages requires admin rights.
