How To Bulk Unfollow Twitter/X Accounts

Getting a clean start on Twitter is not only about cleaning up your old posts. Resetting things like your followed accounts can be just as important to your online presence. I’m going to show you how to do it quickly and easily. Our software, Redact, gives you the ability to quickly and automatically unfollow 10 accounts or 10,000 accounts.

The list of people you follow on Twitter (X) shapes more than your timeline. Your following list helps the platform categorize your account, build lookalike audiences, and steer recommendations and ads associated with your community.

Between you and I, we have to acknowledge that friends, family, and even colleagues can also examine your following list and make a judgement call on your character based upon nothing more than who you’re following on Twitter. As silly as that may be, and I agree it’s stupid and short-sighted, this is the world we are living in today.

  • Ad Targeting: HubSpot notes that your follow list is one of the data points advertisers use to push specific campaigns.
  • Algorithmic Influence: The Guardian reports that social media algorithms amplify harmful or biased content based on who you follow.
  • Travel and Visa Scrutiny: The Washington Post warns that some immigration screenings now include a social media review, and following certain accounts can complicate visa applications.

An unfollowing campaign, weather it be a mass unfollowing or a precision cleanup, gives you a bit of a reset. Instead of endlessly curating a list of accounts or worrying about hidden consequences, you can wipe the slate clean and rebuild a feed that truly reflects your current interests and values. Or you can simply target accounts to unfollow based on a number of filters within the Redact unfollow settings.

How to Bulk Unfollow Twitter Accounts in 5 steps

>>Step 1: Download and install Redact‘s App

Go to redact.dev and install the desktop app for your operating system. We offer support for iOS, Android, Windows, and Linux. Our software is free to download and try out on Twitter, Discord, Reddit, and Facebook. This way, you can try out our tools for free before you commit to purchasing.

>>Step 2: Connect your Twitter or X account

Once downloaded, open Redact and choose choose “Accounts” from the left menu. At the bottom of the accounts drop-down you will see an “+add account” button. Click that button and sign in to your account. We DO NOT store any of your login or account data on external servers – all sensitive info is only stored locally, on your device and accessible only to you.

>>Step 3: Open the Unfollow Accounts tool

Select the “Advanced form” in the top-right of the Twitter tool, then select the “Unfollow Accounts” tab to start unfollowing Twitter/X accounts in bulk.

In the Unfollow Accounts feature, we can unfollow people in bulk, in just a few clicks. You can also filter your mass unfollow to only target specific types of accounts using the “Who Do You Want to Unfollow” menu. You can target;

  • People Not following you
  • Muted accounts
  • Protected accounts
  • Verified accounts
  • Unverified accounts

>>Step 4: Run a preview

I can’t stress enough to make use of the preview setting. Preview mode is basically a test-run that allows you to see who would be unfollowed based on your current unfollow settings. This is simply a dry run, nothing will actually happen except a screen will popup showing you who would have been followed had you been in “deletion mode”. Choose Preview if you want to review first, or go straight to Deletion mode if you are familiar with our software and know what you’re doing.

Keep in mind, when you select deletion mode, there is no going back. Make sure your settings are clean and tight before you switch over to deletion mode.

>>Step 5: Start deletion

Click Start Deletion. Redact will process the removal while pacing requests to respect platform limits. You can watch progress in real time.

Lastly: Confirm your clean slate

When the unfollow run finishes, open Twitter and check your Followers tab to confirm removal. Note that it may take up to one day for Twitter/X to fully update and reflect your new following list after using our software.
