OpenAI has disclosed a new security incident – this time not within its own systems, but through Mixpanel, a third-party analytics provider. The breach exposed limited user-identifiable information tied to OpenAI API accounts, raising fresh concerns over vendor security, data minimization, and the privacy expectations we place on AI companies.

According to OpenAI’s notification email and corresponding public advisory, the Mixpanel breach did not expose chats, API keys, passwords, payment info, or government IDs. Mixpanel detected unauthorized access to part of its systems on November 9, 2025, and later confirmed that an attacker exported a dataset containing customer-identifiable analytics data.   • Account email
  • Approximate location (city/state/country)
  • Browser + OS
  • Referring websites
  • OpenAI user/org IDs

OpenAI has since removed Mixpanel entirely from its production environments and initiated expanded vendor security reviews across its ecosystem.

Recommended steps include:

  • Don’t click links in unexpected emails claiming to be from OpenAI.
  • Verify sending domains before responding.
  • Never share API keys, passwords, or MFA codes – OpenAI won’t ask for them.
  • Enable multi-factor authentication on your OpenAI account.
